Resort areas (Denarau; Mamanuca; Yasawa; Coral Coast): very safe with minimal crime risk. Croatia is a low-crime; safe travel destination. Petty theft (pickpocketing; bag snatching) in crowded tourist areas — Dubrovnik Old City; Split's Peristyle; Zagreb's Ban Jelačić Square — is the primary security concern. Standard urban precautions: use a money belt; carry a copy of your passport (originals in hotel safe); don't leave bags unattended at outdoor restaurants. Dubrovnik in peak summer (July-August) has extreme tourist crowding in the Old City — schedule arrivals before 9am or after 5pm for a manageable experience. Traffic accidents involving rental cars and scooters on narrow island roads are a documented risk for tourists unfamiliar with right-hand traffic (Croatia drives on the right). Never use white taxis or chicken buses — use only radio taxis or app-based rides confirmed through your accommodation. Avoid driving outside Guatemala City at night. Check CONRED (conred.gob.gt) for current volcano alert levels before any volcano hike.

New Zealand is a very low crime destination. Violent crime affecting tourists is rare. Petty theft; vehicle break-ins (leave nothing visible in rental cars in carparks at trailheads); and occasional scams affecting tourists do occur. Key safety reminders: Check GeoNet for volcanic and earthquake alerts; swim between the flags at patrolled beaches (New Zealand's surf is powerful with strong rips); sand flies in Fiordland are ferocious — pack DEET; drive on the left; weather in the Southern Alps changes with extreme speed — always check MetService forecasts before mountain tramping; carry emergency bivouac equipment for South Island high country.

Canada is a very safe travel destination with low violent crime across all major cities. Standard urban precautions apply in Vancouver; Toronto; and Montreal — pickpocketing; vehicle break-ins; and occasional bar-area assaults occur. Key safety considerations specific to Canada: (1) winter driving — ice; snow; reduced visibility; mandatory snow tires in Quebec and recommended throughout; moose on roads at night in forested areas; (2) wildfire smoke — monitor AQI at weather.gc.ca; evacuate affected areas if AQI exceeds safe thresholds for your health conditions; (3) backcountry and wilderness safety — bear spray; satellite communicator for remote travel; always leave itinerary with responsible party; (4) cold injury prevention for any winter outdoor travel. Cannabis is legal federally in Canada — note that transporting cannabis across the US-Canada border remains illegal in both directions regardless of Canadian or US state law.

Sweden is fundamentally a safe travel destination for tourists — the Level 2 advisory reflects the terrorism threat assessment and the documented gang violence; neither of which has resulted in frequent or targeted incidents against tourists. Practical safety guidance: (1) Terrorism: maintain situational awareness in crowded public spaces (Stockholm Central Station; Arlanda Airport; major shopping centers; Gamla Stan during holiday markets) — know exit routes; follow police instructions immediately during any incident; (2) Gang violence: avoid the specific documented gang territorial areas in Malmö (Rosengård); Stockholm (Rinkeby; Husby; Tensta); and Gothenburg (Biskopsgården) — these are outer-city neighborhoods not on the standard tourist circuit and easily avoided; (3) Petty crime: Gamla Stan is the primary pickpocket zone in Stockholm — money belt recommended; (4) Winter driving: mandatory winter tires December 1 through March 31; slow down on ice; elk awareness after dark; (5) Internet scams: do not respond to financial requests from online contacts claiming to need emergency funds from Sweden.

Austria is a safe travel destination with very low crime. Vienna is consistently rated one of the world's most livable and safest cities. Petty theft (pickpocketing) in crowded tourist areas — Vienna's Graben; Kärtnerstrasse; Naschmarkt; Stephansplatz — is the primary crime concern for tourists. Vienna's subway (U-Bahn) has documented pickpocket activity. Standard precautions: money belt; anti-theft bag. Terrorism context: Vienna experienced a major Islamic extremist terrorist attack in November 2020 (4 killed; 23 injured near Schwedenplatz); occasional credible non-specific threats documented in 2023. Follow US Embassy Vienna security alerts. No Level 2 terrorism designation (unlike Denmark and Sweden); general European counter-terrorism awareness applies. Alpine safety: helmets are strongly recommended for skiing and are increasingly the standard; 40% of Alpine skiing head injury deaths involve no helmet.

Romania is generally safe for tourists. Petty crime in Bucharest — pickpocketing on the metro; bag snatching near Gara de Nord (North Train Station); taxi overcharging (use Bolt or Uber exclusively); and occasional street scams targeting tourists are the primary concerns. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Key safety considerations: (1) Stray dogs (câini vagabonzi) — Bucharest and rural Romania have documented stray dog populations; bites requiring rabies PEP assessment do occur; give space to stray dogs; do not approach or feed; (2) Earthquake preparedness — know your building's seismic risk; Romanian authorities have marked highest-risk buildings with red dots; preferred hotels in modern post-1990 construction; (3) Licensed transportation only — Bolt or Uber app; avoid unlicensed taxis; (4) Rural road conditions — Romania's rural road network is significantly below Western European standards; night driving in rural areas is hazardous; (5) Border region awareness — Romania borders Ukraine (active conflict to the northeast); Moldova; Hungary; Bulgaria; and Serbia; these borders are monitored but are secure.
