Pakistan is a Level 3 country with Level 4 sub-zones that have some of the world's most active terrorist and insurgent groups. The March 2026 situation represents an active diplomatic security crisis. Key guidance: (1) DO NOT travel to Balochistan or KP/FATA for any reason — Level 4; (2) DO NOT approach the Line of Control; (3) US consular support is severely limited outside Islamabad — all travel must account for this; (4) Terrorism: vary your routes; avoid predictable patterns; do not use public transportation (prohibited for US government employees per the advisory); (5) Social media: be extremely cautious about any content that could be perceived as critical of the military or government — detention risk is real; (6) Dual nationals: Pakistan does not consistently recognize dual nationality.

Do not travel to Myanmar per the US State Department Level 4 advisory. For those who are present or must travel for extraordinary reasons: (1) Wrongful detention is a documented specific risk — do not photograph military vehicles; personnel; or government buildings; do not participate in or observe protests; be extremely cautious about social media activity critical of the regime; (2) Dual nationals face military conscription risk — Myanmar does not recognize dual nationality; (3) Landmines: stick to paved roads at all times in any area outside major cities; (4) Earthquake: avoid Mandalay and Sagaing region entirely until infrastructure is assessed as safe; aftershocks continue on the Sagaing Fault; (5) Always carry your passport — checkpoints are frequent outside tourist areas; (6) Register with STEP and maintain contact with US Embassy Yangon; (7) Have an updated evacuation plan that does not rely on US government assistance.

Crime and official harassment: smashing car windows documented; avoid photographing government facilities; avoid demonstrations; carry USD small bills; avoid night driving; always carry passport.

Mongolia is a very safe travel destination from a crime and political perspective. Ulaanbaatar has some petty crime (pickpocketing in Sukhbaatar Square; Naran Tuul market; packed microbuses) — standard urban precautions apply. Outside Ulaanbaatar: crime is minimal; Mongolian hospitality is remarkable; travelers in nomadic ger communities are extremely safe. The primary safety risks are environmental: (1) Driving: Mongolia has some of the world's most dangerous road conditions — Ulaanbaatar traffic is aggressive and unpredictable; rural 'roads' are often unmarked tracks across the steppe with GPS navigation required; hire experienced local drivers for all off-road steppe travel; (2) Dzud: follow guide recommendations and weather forecasts during winter and late spring; (3) Wildlife: wolves are present in the steppe — do not wander from camps at night without a guide; (4) Remote communication: satellite phone or InReach communicator is essential for any remote steppe or Gobi itinerary.

The Maldives is a very safe travel destination for crime. The primary safety concerns are environmental: (1) Marine safety: rip currents are the most underappreciated hazard for snorkelers — ask your resort dive instructor about current conditions before snorkeling at any reef passage; always snorkel with a buddy; never alone; (2) Reef walking: wear reef shoes; never walk barefoot on reef areas (stonefish; sea urchins; coral cuts); (3) Cone shells: never pick up cone shells from the ocean floor — the 'geography cone' (Conus geographus) is lethal and there is no antivenom; (4) Sun: equatorial UV index of 12-14 year-round — SPF 50+ application every 90-120 minutes during outdoor activity; (5) Alcohol: Maldives is a Muslim-majority country; alcohol is only legal on licensed resort islands; carry no alcohol to local islands or Malé; (6) Photography: photography of police; military personnel; and certain government buildings may be restricted; use common sense; (7) Terrorism: be aware of surroundings particularly in Malé; the resort island environment is extremely low-risk.

Puerto Rico is safe for tourists with standard US urban precautions. Tourist zones well-policed. Hurricane season June 1-November 30. Drinking age is 18.

Terrorism: DO NOT travel to Level 4 sub-zones. Crime in Maputo after dark. No inter-city night driving. Monitor demonstrations. Cyclone awareness November-April.
