Dominican Republic

Violent crime is the primary risk. Never display expensive jewelry, cameras, or phones. Use registered taxis or resort transportation exclusively — unlicensed taxis are a documented assault vector. Do not accept food or drink from strangers. The April 2025 Jet Set nightclub collapse (200+ fatalities) highlights structural safety risks in local entertainment venues — assess venues carefully before entering. Avoid all Haitian border crossings by land — kidnapping risk on the Haitian side is severe.

Petty theft is the dominant safety concern, particularly in Lisbon's tourist corridors (Alfama, Bairro Alto, Rossio), on tram Line 28, and at Lisbon Airport arrivals. Never leave valuables visible in rental cars — sticker-identified rentals are specifically targeted. Wild swimming is popular in river gorges but currents and flash floods claim lives annually.

Iceland

Iceland is genuinely safe in terms of crime — one of the lowest crime rates in the world. The hazards are entirely natural. Register every off-Ring-Road itinerary at SafeTravel.is before departure. Download the 112 Iceland emergency app. Never turn your back to the ocean at black sand beaches. Do not approach active lava fields or walk on recently cooled lava. Do not attempt glacier hiking without a certified guide. Monitor volcanic gas levels at loftgaedi.is before visiting Reykjanes.

Switzerland

Switzerland is genuinely one of the safest countries in the world. Petty theft at tourist sites and train stations is the primary risk. Alpine activities introduce the most meaningful hazard: avalanche, whiteout conditions, and altitude illness. Always check piste conditions, carry avalanche safety equipment for off-piste skiing, and hire a guide for high-altitude routes above 3000m.

Jamaica

Multiple specific areas are restricted for US government employees including all of Clarendon Parish, parts of Kingston (downtown and August Town), Spanish Town, and inland areas of Montego Bay. Do not travel outside resort grounds after dark. Use only official resort transportation or registered taxis. Do not drive between cities after dark. Confirm availability of hotel and healthcare services in western Jamaica before booking — Hurricane Melissa recovery is ongoing. US government employees also cannot travel on public buses anywhere in Jamaica.

Pickpocketing is the primary safety issue for most travelers — use a money belt or anti-theft bag on public transit, split cash and cards, and never leave bags unattended. Vehicle break-ins are epidemic at tourist parking areas; remove all items from view. Check Etna activity before visiting Sicily — the airport at Catania has closed due to ash on multiple occasions.

Philippines

Never travel to Sulu Archipelago; Marawi City; or western Mindanao — these are active conflict zones with foreign national kidnapping risk. Mindanao outside Davao City and Davao del Norte is Level 3 — reconsider travel for any non-essential itinerary. In Manila; use only Grab (ride-hailing app) or hotel taxis — do not hail unregistered taxis. Typhoon season (June-November): monitor PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric; Geophysical; and Astronomical Services Administration) forecasts and build flexibility into any island itinerary. Never attempt open-water ferry crossing during typhoon warnings — maritime safety standards are not equivalent to US standards.

Argentina

Buenos Aires is safe for typical tourist and business travel with standard urban vigilance. La Boca neighborhood: confine yourself to the main tourist street (El Caminito) during daylight only. Subways and buses: watch for pickpockets particularly on Line A and near tourist areas. Rosario (Santa Fe): check current security situation before visiting. Patagonia: Atlantic coast weather can change rapidly with extreme winds — dress in layers and check forecasts daily.
