Tourists are generally targeted for opportunistic theft rather than violence, but rape and armed robbery have been documented at resorts, on beach excursions, and in nightlife settings. Do not travel outside resort grounds after dark without a vetted guide or resort-provided transportation.

Dengue is endemic with seven major outbreaks recorded over the past 25 years. Transmission peaks during hurricane season (June–November) via Aedes aegypti mosquito.
