Never touch any unidentified metal object in rural areas — UXO risk is real and ongoing particularly in named provinces and off established routes. The Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (Bokeo Province) — avoid entirely; criminal activity including drug trafficking documented by Canadian and Australian governments. Methanol: drink only sealed international commercial spirits from licensed venues. Drug possession carries severe penalties. Motorbike road safety: road accidents are among the leading causes of tourist injury; road conditions outside main highways are often poor and unlit.

Eastern Sabah Level 2 kidnapping sub-advisory: confirm current conditions with US Embassy KL and local operators before traveling to Semporna; Lahad Datu; or eastern coastal Sabah — diving tourism to Sipadan should use established operators who are aware of current security conditions. KL: standard urban vigilance; use Grab for all transportation; Bukit Bintang area is active nightlife with petty theft risk. Jalan Petaling (Chinatown): pickpocket zone — keep phones in front pockets. Drug trafficking carries the death penalty in Malaysia.

Violent crime is the primary risk in all major Brazilian cities. Never visit favelas. Do not resist robbery. Carjacking at traffic lights is documented — keep windows up, doors locked. Kidnapping risk is elevated near the 160km land border zones — these are firm exclusions. Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife, and Fortaleza carry elevated crime risk outside tourist areas. Brazil's Carnival period concentrates crime risk — pickpocketing and spiked drink assaults are documented at major events.

The new criminal code (effective January 2; 2026) is the highest-profile legal change for travelers; stay informed and be circumspect in behavior. Terrorism risk is real and structural — be aware of your surroundings in crowded tourist areas; follow State Dept alerts. Drug laws are severe — death penalty applicable; some US-legal ADHD medications are illegal in Indonesia. Check all medications with the Indonesian Embassy before travel. Mount Merapi near Yogyakarta has active eruption potential; check current alert level before visiting. Never travel to Central or Highland Papua provinces.

Never travel off established roads and trails in northern Sri Lanka (Jaffna; Mullaitivu; former conflict zones) — residual landmines from the 1983–2009 civil war remain active. Use licensed guides for all northern Sri Lanka travel. Post-Cyclone Ditwah (December 2025): verify road conditions before central highlands travel (Kandy; Nuwara Eliya; Ella); some routes remain compromised. Chikungunya active outbreak: DEET is mandatory not optional — wear repellent before any outdoor time; chikungunya joint pain can be debilitating for weeks. Political demonstrations can occur with little warning around economic issues; avoid large gatherings.

DOWNLOAD the Home Front Command Red Alert app (available only on devices inside Israel) IMMEDIATELY upon arrival — this is non-negotiable and the single most important safety tool in Israel. Know the location of the nearest bomb shelter (mamad) to your hotel; verify on check-in. In the event of a siren: move to a shelter or internal room; stay away from windows; wait at least 10 minutes after the last siren before leaving shelter. Avoid all demonstrations. Do not travel within 11.3km of Gaza or within 4km of Lebanese and Syrian borders. Confirm commercial flight status directly with your airline on the day of departure — Israeli airspace has been closed during escalations.

Never travel to Level 4 zones (Guayaquil south of Portete de Tarqui; Huaquillas). Avoid Level 3 zones (Guayaquil north of Portete; Sucumbíos; Manabí; Santa Elena; Santo Domingo; Esmeraldas south; El Oro; Los Ríos) unless on specific mission or business travel with full security protocol. In Quito: use only pre-arranged or hotel-verified taxis; never accept transportation from unknown drivers; establish check-ins with family or colleagues. Monitor the Ecuadorian government security alerts and US Embassy Quito messages for curfew changes; road closures; and new security incidents.
