Belarus

DEPART IMMEDIATELY. If cannot avoid: audit ALL electronic devices (criticism of Lukashenko = criminal charges even from content created outside Belarus years ago); proof-of-life protocol with family; do NOT photograph government/military/KGB; assume all communications monitored; dual nationals treated as Belarusian only; border crossings may close without notice.

Costa Rica

Petty theft and car break-ins are the main crime concern, especially in San Jose and at trailheads. Volcanic activity (Arenal, Poas, Turrialba) can close areas without warning. Earthquake-prone. Rainy season flooding can isolate roads.

United Kingdom

Traffic drives on the left — this is the primary physical safety risk for American pedestrians, who instinctively look the wrong way when crossing. Many pedestrian injuries in the UK involve U.S. tourists. Look right, use crosswalk signals, and remember this every single time you cross a street. Carry photo ID at all times. In Northern Ireland, avoid areas with painted curbs (red/white = Unionist; green/white = Nationalist) during marching season unless you know what you're walking into.

Spain

Barcelona pickpocket risk is genuinely high — use a concealed money belt, split your cash and cards, and be especially cautious on Las Ramblas after dark. Demonstrations in Barcelona around Catalan independence anniversaries (October 1) can become confrontational. Flash flooding risk in Valencia and Catalonia is real and underappreciated — the October 2024 Valencia floods killed over 200 people; heed weather alerts immediately.

Germany

Terrorism situational awareness is the primary safety behavior in Germany — Christmas markets and outdoor festivals are priority targets; know your exits and avoid prolonged static standing in dense crowds. Strikes by Deutsche Bahn train workers and Lufthansa ground staff occur periodically with short notice and can strand travelers. Check schedules before any rail journey. Political demonstrations, particularly by both far-right and far-left groups, occur regularly in Berlin, Dresden, and Leipzig. Autobahn has no universal speed limit on some sections — high-speed driving requires experience. German traffic rules are strictly enforced. Cycling infrastructure is excellent but cyclists must follow traffic laws.

Bahamas

Avoid the 'Over the Hill' area in Nassau (south of Shirley Street) entirely. Do not use independent jet ski operators on New Providence or Paradise Island. Lock vacation rental doors and windows at all times — reports of break-ins to vacation rentals have increased. Do not physically resist robbery attempts. Check all luggage carefully for firearms before leaving the United States — Bahamian law is strict and possession without authorization results in arrest. Cannabis and CBD products are illegal in the Bahamas regardless of any US medical prescription.

Ireland

Petty theft in Dublin (particularly O'Connell Street, Temple Bar, and on public transit) is the main concern. Rental cars are frequently targeted. Atlantic weather on the Wild Atlantic Way can change rapidly — coastal cliff walks carry real risk in high winds or wet conditions. Always stay on marked paths.

Greece

Wildfire risk during summer months is high and genuinely dangerous — monitor the Civil Protection Daily Fire Risk Map (civilprotection.gov.gr), heed local evacuation orders immediately, and maintain flexible travel plans on fire-prone islands. Sea urchin punctures are the most common travel injury in Greece — wear water shoes when swimming near rocky shores. Quad bike and moped rentals on islands are a significant injury risk; standard travel insurance often excludes them — verify coverage before renting and always wear a helmet. Low (pickpocketing in Athens metro and tourist sites; Exarcheia neighborhood has occasional protest-related unrest; very safe overall) HEAT: Summer temperatures exceed 40°C — hydrate constantly at archaeological sites. ISLAND MEDICAL ACCESS: Small islands have limited care; medevac insurance essential. SWIMMING: Respect beach flags; strong currents at some beaches; wear water shoes on rocky beaches. EARTHQUAKES: Greece is seismically active — know your hotel's evacuation plan.
