Thailand
Risk:
Low-Moderate

Health Overview
Dengue fever is the single most important health threat for travelers to Thailand, particularly during the May-November monsoon season. Hepatitis A and typhoid transmit through contaminated food and water outside high-end establishments. Thailand has excellent private hospitals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but rural healthcare drops off sharply. The difference between a prepared and unprepared traveler here is mosquito protection discipline and knowing which hospital to reach. Be sure to consult your Dr. prior to travel to discuss
Key Health Risks
High
Dengue Fever
Nationwide year-round, peak May-Nov. No vaccine widely available for travelers. DEET-based repellent and permethrin-treated clothing are primary defense.
High
Traveler's Diarrhea
Very common outside hotel/resort settings. Carry azithromycin for empiric self-treatment. Avoid ice from unknown sources and pre-peeled street fruit.
Moderate
Malaria
Border provinces only. P. falciparum with mefloquine resistance along Myanmar border. Atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline recommended for border travel.
Health Risk Callout
Motorcycle accidents are the leading cause of tourist injury and death in Thailand. Helmet use is poorly enforced.
Other Health Risks
Leptospirosis (flooding season), rabies (stray dogs common), soil-transmitted helminths, heat illness
Regional Information
Regional Risk Callout
Bangkok and major resort islands (Phuket, Koh Samui) carry lower malaria risk but year-round dengue. Thai-Myanmar and Thai-Cambodia border provinces carry genuine malaria transmission with multi-drug-resistant P. falciparum. Southern border provinces (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat) carry a separate security risk with an active insurgency.
Regional Healthcare Callout
Outside Bangkok, Chiang Mai has serviceable private facilities. Islands and rural areas may require medical evacuation to Bangkok for serious injuries.
Vaccine and Malaria Prevention
๐ Entry Vaccine Required
Yellow Fever vaccination required if arriving from a country with YF transmission risk. Not required from US/EU.
๐ก๏ธ Recommended Vaccines
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Routine (Tdap, MMR, Flu, COVID-19, Polio)

Thailand is one of my favorite destinations and I've spent considerable time there. The healthcare in Bangkok โ particularly Bumrungrad โ is legitimately world-class. But outside Bangkok, the gap is real.Tourists rent scooters with no experience, no helmet, and alcohol on board.
It's predictable and preventable. On the infectious disease front, dengue is the big one โ it's not theoretical, it's common. DEET works.
Permethrin works. Use both. Be sure to consult your Dr.
