Qatar is at Level 3 — Reconsider Travel — dated August 28 2026, on risk of armed conflict. The March 2026 ordered departure and the depart-now language are no longer in the advisory; as of August 28 family members may join US government employees, and the advisory does not direct Americans to leave. The level reflects the conflict, not an evacuation posture. That distinction is the whole consultation, and it is the one most likely to be gotten wrong from memory of the spring.

The war that produced the March posture has evolved rather than ended. Hostilities began in February 2026; a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire took hold in April and was extended indefinitely, then eroded — a June memorandum meant to formally end the conflict expired in mid-August with the parties deadlocked, and fighting has resumed periodically, including Iranian missile and drone fire toward neighboring countries hosting US bases. Qatar hosts Al Udeid, the largest US base in the region. A Level 3 advisory on armed conflict is not a formality, and it can move in either direction quickly. Anyone with Qatar travel planned should have the current advisory in front of them on the day they book, not a version of it remembered from a month ago.
