For travelers who are still planning Oman itineraries or who are currently in-country: monitor commercial flight availability closely; verify medevac routing is not dependent on disrupted Gulf airspace; and know that the Yemen border region remains Level 4 Do Not Travel.
The clinical conversation I still spend time on is MERS-CoV — it doesn't go away because of geopolitics. Desert trip patients universally plan camel interactions; and I tell them: 'Camels are the primary reservoir for MERS. The case fatality rate is 35%.
Don't ride them; don't touch them; don't drink camel milk.' Schistosomiasis in wadis is the other Oman-specific point that matters because wadi swimming is a defining Oman experience — the Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid swims are extraordinary; but the parasite is real. Cover cuts before freshwater exposure and consider post-trip praziquantel if there was significant water contact.
