Physician Note
Lithuania gets one of my most focused vaccine conversations, because the Baltic states carry some of the world's highest tick-borne encephalitis rates and TBE is the rare disease where the pitch writes itself: a tick-transmitted viral brain infection with no treatment, a 1-2% fatality rate, neurological sequelae in a meaningful share of survivors — and an FDA-approved vaccine, TICOVAC, that needs to be started at least eight weeks out. Anyone hiking Aukštaitija's forests, cycling the Curonian Spit, or spending time outdoors April through November should have that conversation; the same ticks carry Lyme, and one exposure route surprises people — unpasteurized dairy can transmit TBE, so skip the farm-stand raw milk.
Beyond ticks, Lithuania is a Level 1 country with excellent tap water and a capable system anchored by Santaros Klinikos in Vilnius; complex cases route to Warsaw or Berlin. Two regional quirks are worth a briefing: GPS jamming near Kaliningrad makes offline maps essential on the Curonian Spit, and the LT72 civil-preparedness app is the local standard. Watch for moose at dawn and dusk on rural roads, and mind your drink in Vilnius nightlife — spiking is reported.
