Physician Note
Finland generates one of the most specific clinical conversations: the sauna counseling. It sounds unusual to include sauna safety in a travel medicine consultation but in Finland's context it's genuinely warranted: 3.2 million saunas for 5.5 million people; sauna is integral to Finnish social life; first-time sauna users frequently stay too long in conditions they are not physiologically adapted to; and the cultural combination of prolonged sauna use with significant alcohol is the recipe for hyperthermic injury or cold water shock injury. I give a brief but direct sauna briefing to every Finland-bound patient.
For TBE: the geographic specificity of Finland's endemic areas is worth understanding — it's not the whole country as in Austria; it's specifically the Åland Islands; the Turku and Pargas archipelago; and a few named localities in southern Finland. TICOVAC is a specific recommendation for these areas; not a blanket Finland recommendation. And the important update: Finland was removed from the Global Polio THN on March 9 2026 — the polio booster recommendation that applied to Finland travel earlier is no longer current.
Be sure to consult your Dr. prior to travel to discuss.
